If you just started playing,you will learn body slam later on. When you learn to body slam you have a choice if you want to come back and slam down the button. I think it's just a better item like a shell or bracelet. Hope this helped.
To use body slam, change action icons with R and hit Y. Then, hit Y again before Bowser touches the ground. Do this on the ! Buttons on the ground and there you go! To unlock body slam you must have Mario and Luigi go through energy hold (after Bowser goes through Blubble Lake) and then to joint tower and when you complete your task in joint tower then Bowser unlocks body slam.
