I'm inside of the pump-works place and in the walkthroughs it's telling me that I nee to pull out my hammer.. How do I pull out my hammer when I'm not fighting? I need to hit this one red blob looking thing but I don't know how to pull out my hammer

There are no requirements to start this, so just press are, and you will see, in the action icon, that Mario's part of it has a hammer on it. Press A to whack. If you press L or are though, A will only make Mario jump. The red blobs, as you call them, will activate an event so you may proceed. Also, later in the game, you may hit these red blobs with shell blocks. I hope that I've helped. MaPoLe3591
