Question for Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

hi, I'm really lost with this game and I dont get it. I know the controls and how the characters work but just seem to be wondering around aimlessley. I've just found the key in the pump works and unlocked browers ability to burn things but where next?? all the other levels I cant swim up high.
