Question for Mario Kart DS

I'm trying to do the mission on mario kart ds. I'm on level one 1-8 how do I successfully do a power-slide turbo boost? Apparently it doesn't seem like i'm doing it right.

Controls you need:D-pad and R Button
When you're aproaching to the turn, use the R button (hold) and press the D-pad in the direction of the turn
Then press the d-pad to the opposite side 3 times (hold) and your tires will have orange sparks,then realease the R button and presto! You have made a power-slide turbo boost(R button+D-pad:left-right-letf-rigt+realease R button)
