First, get into a powerslide by holding R and pressing left or right.
You should be skidding, with white smoke coming from the back of your tires. Then, tap left and right, and you should get blue sparks.
Keep tapping them, and you will get gold sparks. Release the powerslide to get the boost.

Turn to the side and jump to start drifting then shift the joy pad to the left and right until you get red sparks, then release.

You need to press R to jump, and then you tap left right left right untill you see red sparks coming from your tires, then you should get a boost
