It is random. My suggestion is to set about 5 traps at once and hope for the best. ( If you go into the cave and come out to the grasslands you can hear if any animals are caught. This will save time and your stats.)

I agree with what the other dude said, and I have a cheat to make two traps out of one: go to the options screen with rest, make tool, etc. Now press A repetively when your backpack is highlighted STOP when it comes up. Now select the use feature of one of your traps the usual way, exit menu. You should see your character picking up a trap but trust me. Go to another spot use your trap and it will appear the normal way, leave the area, come back whenever you want to. Go to the spot of the first trap, yes! It worked! There are now two traps set up, pretty cool huh?

The two people above me are right, but it takes too long to wait, so if you want an animal quick, find a deer or goat or whatever and get as close as possible, but not too close so you don't scare it. Watch it for a moment until you can guess where it's going to go next, and set a trap in front of it. (While it's munching on some grass.) Wait, and if you did a good job you should have snagged it. But the dumb thing usually walks around in a circle, eating grass, but not always, so always put the trap in front of it. This method has a 70 percent chance of working, and it always worked for me unless I got too close. Also, for the set-traps-come-back-next-day strategy, try not to have the traps too close to each other, because then they disappear. Why, I don't know...but it happens, so you might as well get ready for it ^_^ Hope this helped!
