In Chapter one he says the box is empty. I can't even get the box off the bed or continue on in the game

For starters, please be specific. You are being a bit vague.

Now, the box (i presume) is the red box you were sent to the hotel to get or either the box you receive (later you find out) by mistake. Option 1 (Red Box): you don't get it until the end, so don't think about it.

Option 2 (wrong box): Open the box on the bed. You find a novel. You can now continue on
