Question for Harvest Moon: Sunshine Islands

I'm in Year 2 already and I've still got Denny at a black heart, though I talk to him often and maybe because he won't accept my gifts.
How do I get him to accept my gifts/get to a higher heart?

One very important question: have you been littering around him? Because if you have (I.e, throwing stuff on the ground accidentally) then that decreases friends points. Maybe you can try not having anything in your hands when you're near him, and spend time just talking to him.
Are you talkking to him once every day? Characters take 5~ish days of "warming up"- basically you need to just talk to them for 5~ish days before they will accept your presents.

The 1st answer is right, and I would just like to ask that if you haven't talked to him for a long time, say, a few days, he won't accept your gifts. And also, littering is a big no-no in the island. It causes the villagers to dislike you.
