Good question! I usually just use the hoe on the entire area and then just water it all. I haven't planted on outside land (except for the super field).

I don't see why seeds would mess this up, but I would water the squares first, and THEN scatter seeds. If your sprite is there, he will appear before you have time to put down seeds.

I found one in the field to the right of the waterfall.....
