Animals need lots of love and attention. You have to brush, wash, pet and talk to your pets every day. You can't wash birds, but you can pet them. Make sure you have the red touch glove equipped when you do this, and after awhile, check thier status. You'll see that they have affection hearts. Also, if you have an animal born ON your farm, they will be born with 2 hearts. Makes it easier.
I have found that an animal needs approx 8 hearts to win any competitions, so keep trying!
