When forging an item I can change the
Wt what difference does it make?

Weight, for some reason, determines how fast a person's weapon level will grow - the heavier, the faster. However, the Strength a unit requires to double attack with a heavier weapon is higher, so you might not be double attacking with the weapon unless the unit is strong enough (and, obviously, fast enough).

Lighter weights have the opposite effect. It's easier to double attack with them, but your unit's weapon level will take much longer to grow.

Personally, I would just leave the Weight as it is, as it costs extra money to go both ways and weapon levels grow at a relatively fast pace in the game, anyway.
