You need to wait until you are told by Reginald (the tomato headed Dorm Room owner) to tell you that the principal wants to talk with you. Talk with him and select something with the word "Evaluation" or "Evaluate" and after that, go to the school, go up the stairs and then turn right and climb those stairs. You will be talked to. This will give you some Mini Stars and once you have 10, you will obtain a Big Star. Each Big Star you have, you automatically obtain a new Hat (can be selected in the Start Menu). To obtain more Mini Stars, try: Pulling up weeds, talking to other citizens, fishing and catching a lot of bugs, attending classes, etc. I hope this helps you (also, when you talk to the principal, you also have the chance to obtain a Key for the Gateway of the Beginning and End for Mystery Time. This does NOT always work when you want it to)!
