Getting Through Wilfre's Lair

I'm stuck on part of Wilfre's Lair. In the second section, I go down a little way, then do some jumping on disappearing platfroms and falling platforms, and get all the way to left where I find a trident. I activate the trident, causing the black liquid to drain. Then I go down into the area I've opened and a little ways to the right are two pits that kill you if you fall into them. I use a jump flip to get over the first one, but that doesn't seem to work on the second one. Does anyone have any advice? I've already lost five lives on this!
