Style is for monsters. They look at you and either they stare at them "Completely enthralled" the game says, or "the (say liquid metal slime) gets so fixated with (one of my automatic party characters is Desmonda) Desmonda that it gets paralyzed!". So style is for a chance at getting the edge over the enemy. You don't have to listen to this next part. Once style helped me immensely. I was left alone, my party dead. Shogum almost killed me with Kaboom. He then looked at me and got paralyzed. So I brought my party back with Kazing, Myra healed them, and won by a sliver. See what can happen with you...
