How do I befriend a digimon? I haven't played in a while.

I believe if you have that digimon you buy somthing 4 you're farm island that raises friendship.
You cannot befriend a digimon you can only receive it by either digiconvert it once you have 100% of it's scan data or when you have a digiegg.
If you mean increasing a friendship you can either buy some farm good that raises friendship and put that item and the digimon you wanna befriend into the farm and talk to it often or by just putting it into your party and kepp trashing other digimon
