You connect by getting other peoples friend codes, it can be long distance friends or your friend could be sitting next to you. You go to the gate with the dogs, to either go to another town or to invite someone in, but you both have to have each others friend codes. You find out your friend code by talking to the white dog on the left. Hope this kinda helped.
