Job levels are based on how much actions are taken in battle.

1) Guard is always done regardless of speed so if your enemy can be taken out with one blow then guard three characters and attack with one.

2) Magic takes the most amount of time to conduct.

3) The most necessary jobs to grind for job levels are theives, monks, and black belts. Theives really don't steal anything you can't buy until job level 30 and need level 71 to steal Odin's spear. Monks and Black Belts attack without knuckles is significantly affected by job levels.

4) The least necessary to grind levels are scholars because item lore is the same regardless of level.
