To make your own team you just go to a competition and choose which ones you want. If you are talking about the ones you raise on your GBA or GB, you need to have a special adapter that goes in the bottom of the controller. There you can put in your GB game and download or put them in the game. Only problem with this is you need to find one with the correct spacing for the game. I have one and it is for the GB games, my GBA game won't fit into it. So watch out for that.

You can transfer your team to the game OR choose rental Pokemon from the Rental Pokemon menu to choose different Pokemon. They may not have your favorite moves though.
