Hearthfire Announced for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

(Play artsy classical music in your head as educational infotainment segment begins) Hello, and welcome to GUTV's wonderfully edumacational feature segment, Learning About Video Game Culture! Today's segment is on "Downloadable Content" -- or what the cool kids call "DLC."

For those of you just tuning in, DLC is official additional content for a video games that is primarily distributed through the Internet, where it is bought and sold -- and in fact it comes in several different types, from accessory content like in-game outfits, special weapons, and other kit, to entirely new game expansions with extensive additions to the storyline, and then there are the official Expansion Packs that add much larger and more involved additions to a game.

The plans and schematics for the new Gaming Update offices for Skyrim are contained in this glowing book that we call "Precious" and that it seems some nutter has decided needs to be thrown into a lava pit at some godforsaken and hard to reach location at the ends of the earth...

In the world of RPG gaming there are few titles that have resonated with the gaming world in the way that Bethesda Softworks RPG game series "The Elder Scrolls" has -- with many gamers who are fans of the series having declared the most recent addition to the series, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim to be the best offering yet in this epic tale of betrayal, heartbreak, pancake eating competition, and dragon slaying... Before TESV was released most gamers considered The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion to be the cat's meow of the series...

Recently the first major expansion to TESV was released -- called The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Dawnguard -- and your GU Reporter was assigned the major privilege and honor to follow up his TESV: Skyrim Unofficial Guide and Walkthrough with TESV: Skyrim Dawnguard Unofficial Guide and Walkthrough, both of which are published on GU's sister site, SuperCheats.com.

Today Bethesda Softworks has announced Hearthfire, the next official game add-on for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim! Hearthfire allows you to purchase land and build your own home from the ground up -- from a simple one-room cottage to a sprawling compound complete with armory, alchemy laboratory, and more. Choose your land, customize your house, guard it from unwanted visitors, and even turn your house into a home by adopting children!

This woman was interviewed outside of her new home, which is also the newest bed and breakfast in Stars Hallow -- called the Dragonfly Inn -- telling this GU Reporter: "Being a single parent is a difficult and challenging role to play, especially in a world in which dragons can attack any time, and without notice, but raising my daughter with the help of my best friend and the chef here at the Dragonfly, along with a buffed and hunky cafe owner in town, and a large cast of colorful local characters has made all of the difference in the world! Now that my daughter is off studying at the Mage's College in Winterhold I find I have more 'Me-Time' to spend designing my new home!"

Here at Gaming Update we are Equal Opportunity Gaming Advocates, which is a fancy way of saying that we do not prefer any specific console or platform over another, being firm believers in the notion that any gaming is better than no gaming at all, which neatly explains why we feel sad that gamers who prefer the PC or PS3 as their platform of choice are going to have to wait a while before they, too, will be able to purchase some land and build their dream home in the world of Skyrim, as Xbox 360 games are getting first-dibs on this new expanded content that brings the Australian Dream of home ownership into the grasp of gamers everywhere.

That's right mates, gamers on Microsoft's Xbox 360 will be getting Hearthfire on September 4th, but the official word on when PC and PlayStation 3 gamers will be getting the content has still not been offered. But we have every confidence that as soon as it is humanly possible PC gamers and fans of Sony's aging but still very much relevant console will enjoy the privileges of a personal dunny upon which they can greet the morning with the age-old Aussie ritual of a smoke and cuppa, grunt or two, and nearly instant relief. Yeah, it doesn't get better than that.

If it feels like the Xbox 360 has been given preference with respect to DLC and expansion content in Skyrim, well, yeah, it has. In fact the reason for that is because Microsoft hammered out a deal with Bethesda giving Micro$oft early and exclusive access to the first pair of DLC offerings before Skyrim ever even shipped! But that deal has run its course now, with the release of Hearthfire on September 4th, so we should be seeing -- and expect to see -- a more balanced release schedule for future DLC and expansion content, of which we anticipate plenty!

Hearthfire will be available for download for 400 Microsoft Points on Xbox LIVE on September 4th. For more information on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or Hearthfire point your browser at www.elderscrolls.com -- and you can also hit this video embedded below for some instant gratification:
