Teams from more than 30 companies, including Amazon, Facebook, Google, IBM, Intel and Microsoft, compete for charity in the 2012 After Hours Gaming League
Abandoning the boardroom for the battlefield, employees from reigning champion Microsoft and 30 other companies, including Amazon, Facebook, Google, IBM, Intel, Twitter, and Zynga, are mousing their way to glory in Season Two of the After Hours Gaming League (AHGL).
After four months of hard-fought battles, the StarCraft II Championship has culminated in undefeated newcomer Epic Systems, a healthcare software company, squaring off against Fortune 500 giant IBM. In the League of Legends Championship, Amazon.com, the world's largest online retailer, is set to compete against Electronic Arts, an undisputed giant in the gaming arena, on the Field of Justice. These corporate finalists will face off at Red Bullís North American headquarters in Santa Monica on April 21 with their colleagues and supporters cheering them on from the sidelines.
The AHGL is a computer gaming league for major corporations, a modern media alternative to the corporate sports clubs of the past. Launched with eight high tech companies in 2011, the AHGL has exploded to over 30 corporate teams in 2012, all vying for victory on the virtual battlefield of Blizzard Entertainment's eSports flagship, StarCraft II and Riot Games' eSports sensation, League of Legends. Donated in equal parts by Blizzard Entertainment and Riot Games, the $5K prize purse for each game goes to the charity of each champion team's choosing.
The AHGL is the brainchild of celebrity gamer Sean "Day(9)" Plott, who was recently named to Forbes "30 under 30" list for his work as a gaming sportcaster and "funsmith."
Plott explains, "It's a modern world. Online gamers are everywhere -- including at top companies -- and they are openly embracing their inner geek. The popularity of the AHGL demonstrates that even the corporate softball team is being affected by disruptive technology. Game on!"
Eliminated along the way were teams from Adobe, AMD, Digital Extremes, Dropbox, Ernst & Young, Facebook, FactSet, GearBox, Geek Squad, Google, Legend3D, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Mozilla, NVIDIA, Palantir, Pipeworks, Promethean World, Qualcomm, RapidShare, Shopify, TwitchTV, Twitter, Western Digital, Zappos, and Zynga.
Season One AHGL videos were viewed more than 2.5 million times and the live finals (which were held on Facebook's campus) saw more than 11,000 concurrent viewers on the live internet stream. For more information visit: http://AfterHoursGaming.tv.
