The next spectacular real-time strategy game offering from Eugen Systems, Wargame: European Escalation, is not going to arrive on schedule according to the official word, passed today along with 5 new explosive screenshots depicting NATO forces desperately defending their lines at Ramstein Air Base in West Germany -- wow, it has been so long since there was a West Germany that it feels strange saying that...
Under heavy assault from the Warsaw pact forces, the defenders must give it everything they have in a last-ditch effort at defense, illustrating why in addition to the massive air presence in Western Europe the NATO commands included extensive armored and rapid-deployment forces.
These new screenshots (above) are being presented as an opportunity to show the level of detail offered by Wargame, which includes quality of the never-before-seen in a real-time strategy game sort, and perhaps downplay the news that the game release is delayed...
After more than a month of speculation by the RTS gaming community -- and no word from Eugen or Focus -- the bad news is official -- the game really is being pushed back to a 2012 release schedule. While the exact date has not been released (it is expected to be officially announced before the holidays) the need to delay the release was evidently a mutual decision between Focus and Eugen Systems.
"The decision to delay the release was not an easy one," our anonymous source at the developer explained today, "but ultimately it was decided that it was better to delay the release by a few months and solve the handful of outstanding issues and give it an extra layer of polish than it would have been to release it with outstanding issues on the multi-player side of the game."
The game is now planned for release some time during the first quarter of 2012, and Gaming Update will be staying on top of the issue -- and keeping you in the loop -- as more details develop in the coming weeks.
