[page-break]About Wargame: European Escalation
Wargame: European Escalation, the new real time strategy game from Eugen Systems, who have become something of a specialist in the genre -- is built around depth and reflection, the key elements of classic wargames. Above solid foundations they have built an impressive list of features and enhancements in order to provide a unique and innovative gaming experience to all real-time strategy fans.
The game features intense real-time battles, stunning graphics, and the amazing IRISZOOM system, which allows a continuous zoom from a global view of the map to the heart of the action. With real strategic game play, rich content, integration of EugenNet and its numerous online services, Wargame: European Escalation will unite all the world's biggest strategy fans.
Set in the rarely explored period of 1975-1985, the game pits NATO (USA and Western Europe) against the Warsaw Pact (Soviet and Eastern European countries) in battles that explore "what could have been."
The specter of nuclear warfare loomed large over the real Cold War, but this catastrophic outcome was the ultimate last resort as everyone knew that the first one to start nuclear hostilities would end up wiped out just the same. Large, armored offensives through Europe would certainly have been the core of this hypothetical war; and this is what the game's explosive campaign takes you through!
Our first-look at the game happened at E3, and when the Gaming Update crew took its first bite there was a definite attraction -- with our official E3 Intern commenting that it seemed to have the spirit and the draw of Ruse, while bringing something new and different to the table. The new and different part may well be the startling presence of modern military hardware -- or at least modern in the sense that you have rotary-wing aircraft and proper main battle tanks working together -- which is about as modern a set of battle tactics as you can get.
We are old enough to remember classic tank games like Panzer General and the widely played free game for Linux, Tank Commander, that had us riveted to our seats while playing through the first Gulf War -- and European Escalation takes that genre and injects it with steroids, which we think is a good thing.
If this is a taste of things to come from Eugen Systems we cannot wait to see what they have on the drawing board! Look for a full preview -- and review -- for this title in coming months!
Wargame : European Escalation will be available exclusively on PC in Q4 2011.
