Remember PlayStation Home? If you own a PS3 it is on your hard drive -- and you can even go there -- but very few gamers do. Well, that may be changing as Deep Silver announced today that shortly before its release at the beginning of September, the zombie outbreak from the highly anticipated game Dead Island will also spread to PlayStation®Home, offering players aged 17 and up an exclusive opportunity to further deepen their Dead Island experience through PlayStation Home's Total Game Integration campaign.
If you are wondering what the Total Game Integration campaign is, it is a melding of game PR and the Home service! When users logged into Home this past January 27, they found the Home Central Plaza -- which is usually this really pristine green and marbled meeting place -- lying in ruins, having suffered a devastating Helghast attack ala Killzone 3 and wow that was way more cool than it sounds!
The Central Plaza Defender mini-game that was part of the promotional event included a last stand-style FPS in which players had to defend against the invading Helghast forces -- and success through its three levels earned players Unlock Points for use in Killzone 3 multiplayer. That's right, logging into Home and putting the beatdown on the invading horde resulted in points that allowed gamers to unlock weapons and skills in Killzone 3, and yeah, that was a real Woot! feature.
Dead Island @ Home
This time around terrifying zombies will lurk in the once peaceful Central Plaza and, soon enough, it will come to resemble the Royal Palms Resort on the tropical island of Banoi, with palm trees and beautiful tropical vegetation, a gorgeous beach and stunning view of the ocean, bringing the unique Banoi feeling to PlayStation Home visitors.
The Dead Island Themed Mini-game
You saw this coming, right? Sure you did! For a bit of relief players can have their photo taken with a zombie or take a zombie survival survey where they can prove their knowledge of the undead and have the opportunity to earn 4 free PlayStation Home rewards. At the end participants will be rated with their estimated chance of survival in a real zombie apocalypse.
Certain items in the PlayStation 3 system version of Dead Island will only be obtained through this PlayStation Home event. Each week will introduce more levels and unlockable content including a premium PlayStation Home reward "Exploding Zombie Outfit" for players that pre-order Dead Island directly from Home's Central Plaza and the aforementioned "Exploding Meat", a powerful weapon for use in Dead Island that can only be acquired by surviving the PlayStation Home onslaught.
PlayStation Home users will also be able to pre-order Dead Island through a themed kiosk directly from the Central Plaza.
About Dead Island
Dead Island, the upcoming gruesome zombie action game with RPG elements by renowned developer Techland, combines first-person action with a heavy focus on melee combat, character development and customization of a vast array of weapons. All of these gameplay features are presented in a dark story inspired by classic zombie movies with a gritty and engrossing campaign that can be played with up to four players in co-op mode.
Set in an open world tropical island, hordes of different festering zombies await players around every corner while they embark on a variety of thrilling missions through the holiday resort. With firearms and ammunition being scarce the player must rely on discovering and utilizing items as weapons for self-defense and fighting off zombie hordes in intense melee combat. A diverse range of items can be collected and will later serve to transform the player’s ordinary makeshift weapons into serious instruments of destruction.
Dead Island will be released worldwide for the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360, and Windows PC.
