Four new screens from the upcoming super hero romp from Sega showcase Cappie, the perfect hero for the 4th of July Holidays!
Captain America: Super Soldier is an upcoming third person single-player game game for Xbox 360 and PS3 that is loosely based on the upcoming film Captain America: The First Avenger , and features the classic elements of play as Captain America: his balanced but deadly shield, acrobatic abilities, and keen mind set him apart as both a hero and the genetically altered super solider that he was created to me.
A fictional character and superhero that first appears in the comic books published by Marvel Comics (Captain America Comics #1 March 1941), Captain America was a case of arriving at the right time and in the right place. America in the Spring of 1941 was still largely isolationist, viewing the war that had embroiled the rest of the world as the problem of other nations, not America, and the enthusiastic patriotism that would arrive in America along with Santa Clause had yet to appear on the scene.
Created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, Captain America was the alter ego of Steve Rogers, a sickly young man who was enhanced to the peak of human perfection by an experimental serum in order to aid the United States war effort. The character was created and developed well before the Nazi propaganda machine began its glorification of the perfect homo sapiens, so it is fair to say that the star-spangled- and costumed character who is armed with an indestructible shield that can be thrown as a weapon was uniquely an American creation.

A Timely Creation
The months leading up to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that allowed America to enter the war in Europe and, eventually, in Asia, was a dark period in the history of America -- a country that had yet to come to view itself as the bastion of democracy in the world, and that still retained a resentment for France and Germany, and how the French had marginalized America's contribution in World War I.
An intentionally patriotic creation, Captain America was intended to serve as a focus for ideas that had yet to take hold in the USA, starting with its obligations to follow through on the promises that it made at the Versailles Treaty. Often depicted fighting the Axis powers during World War II, Captain America became an icon for what was rightly viewed as the necessary presence of America upon the world stage and in the war.
Four New Pics to Celebrate Spring!
Once the war ended however, there was no room in the world for an uber-patriot, especially for ex-servicemen who just wanted to come home and begin building the lives that were put on hold by the war. The huge leap forward in technology and its application in civilian life saw the comics industry increasingly focus upon heroes who used technology, so that by the early 1950's Captain America and his sidekick had all but disappeared, making room for heroes like The Batman, who relied upon technology rather than genetic mutation as the source for their powers.
By the mid-1960's America needed Captain America again, and fortunately he was available, having been stored in a warehouse in New Jersey in suspended animation, a hero banked for the day when heroes were needed again!
The Video Games
The Prologue Trailer - Captain America in Action!
Captain America is no stranger to the medium of the video game -- in fact there have been no fewer than a baker's dozen of titles in which The Cap played a major role, including:-- Captain America Defies The Doom Tube
(1987)-- Spider-Man and Captain America in Doctor Doom's Revenge
(1989)-- Captain America and the Avengers
(1991)-- Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage
(1994)-- Marvel Super Heroes
(1995)-- Marvel Super Heroes: War of the Gems
(1996)-- Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter
(1997)-- Marvel Vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes
(2000)-- Marvel Vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes
(2000)-- Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects
(2005)-- Marvel Ultimate Alliance
(2006)-- Marvel Trading Card Game
In Captain America: Super Soldier
, The Cap is the focus of the game, which is unfortunately a movie-tie-in game (which is often the kiss of death for that sort of video game), but who knows, it could end up being a very good game!
Among the villains that Cap will face are Arnim Zola, Iron Cross, Madame Hydra, the Infamous Red Skull, and Baron Strucker -- and we will see some familiar faces on the side of good in the form of his ever0faithful sidekick Bucky, Nick Fury and the Howling Commandos, and an early incarnation of that super group of super heroes, The Invaders!
Captain America: Super Soldier is set to release on Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3, Wii, and Xbox 360 on July 15th in the UK and EU, and, and on July 19th in North America.
