Pokemon Black & White Shatter Sales Records -- We Are Not Surprised

When the press release came off the wire service declaring that the two new Pokémon video games -- Black & White -- that went on sale on March 6 promptly shattered all previous U.S. Pokémon sales records the language of the release was structured such that clearly it expected we would be surprised. Well, no. Not so much really.

If you were standing in the lines outside of Nintendo World this past Saturday, you *know* what was going to happen the next day -- there was no room for doubt. Stores all over the continent were going to get slammed for a few hours, and then run out of games. Guess what? Stores got slammed for a few hours and then ran out of games.

Fortunately we have Nintendo's PR folks to tell us that the Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version games for the Nintendo DS family of systems became the fastest-selling Pokémon video games of all time, selling more than 1.08 million units after just one day of availability. That surpasses the previous one-day sales record of more than 780,000 set by the Pokémon Diamond Version and Pokémon Pearl Version games in April 2007.

That's nice for Nintendo -- and maybe Game Freak (who we like very much) -- but considering the fact that Nintendo's PR agency only sends review games to HUGE media outlets -- and when we ask they either say no-can-do-little-fella or worse, that they will LOAN us a game, well... Every time I pass on news from them like this I feel like a dirty little boy. That's all I am saying.
