Introduction

Well, I borrowed this game from a friend a little while ago, and I'm not going to lie. I didn't expect to like this game. I'm not a horror genre guy, as I normally end up being too scared to really enjoy the game, but I played Left 4 Dead, and horror it is not, bloody excellent action it is. Let me tell you right now though, if you want interesting plot and character development, including a sappy love story and cutscenes that drag on for ages without end, this is not the game for you. This game has a grand total of one cutscenes, which you're allowed to skip. However, if you like action, enough zombies to populate Rhode Island, and lots of violence, then this could be the game for you.

Graphics

I'll be brutally honest here, the graphics are not the best part of the game. While they're certainly not bad, you also have to understand that this was made on the engine that created Team Fortresses 2 and Portal, neither of which had stunning graphics. However, the graphics were pretty good even considering that. The zombies are certainly well made, as in, it actually looks like a zombie, rather than a human with green skin. The level design is nice, and the scenes were certainly pretty. It won't be winning any graphic battles against Gears of War 2 or Metal Gear Solid 4 any time soon, but it'll do.

Sound

The seven here might seem harsh, but looking back on it, there wasn't much in the way of sounds to get too excited about. Oh, sure the zombies sounded cool, and the weapons sounded realistic. The dialogue between characters in and out of battles was fun to listen to and pretty witty. But then again, there's not usually any music, which, for a game that's supposed to be horrific, kinda disappointed me. The only background noise you got other than the zombies noises were the occasional piano music that played, some weird music that's impossible to describe when a special infected is around, and the actually pretty cool music that plays when the Witch is around. However, the little amount of ambiance kinda disappointed me here.

Gameplay

And here we have the place where Left 4 Dead kicked butt in every way. Gameplay consists of playing through 4 different campaigns with 5 levels in each. That doesn't SOUND like much, but every time you play the zombies attack differently, depending on how you're progressing, your difficulty, and the mood of the Director. You get to use weapons including pistols, shotguns, machine guns, a sniper rifle, and two kinds of explosives. If that doesn't seem like much, you're right, which is my only complaint here: Very few weapons. Even so, it won't distract from the fun of blowing a Boomer up if you have to use a shotgun over and over. You get 3 AI companions unless you have a friend over who can control one of them, or you can play with 4 humans over Xbox LIVE, but the AI in this game is very smart, and you'll soon find yourself relying on them for backup and for companionship. Best of all, you really get that feeling that all hope is lost and that you may not live, and that you're living in a zombie apocalypse. There's a story buried in there somewhere, with an infection that cause people to go crazy or something, but it doesn't really NEED a story, and some dumb story would have screwed this game, and the fact that they SHOULDN'T have had a story and DIDN'T is impressive.

Lastability

I have not played online, so this is just based off of couch Co-Op and single player. The game is certainly fun and will have you coming back for a while, but the fact that the zombies are in different places isn't really enough to make you want to play campaigns over and over again. I'm sure that online would remedy this, but essentially, you're just playing the same 4 campaigns over and over again. However, it will keep you amused for a while, and adding a buddy helps.

Overall

Left 4 Dead isn't really original, but I think it did a great job. A few more campaigns would have been nice, but even so, I really liked this game. It was fun, had lots of sexy violence, and the achievements were great. IT had some downs, but every game has it's ups and downs. If you have LIVE, this is defiantly a purchase. If not, a rent, or maybe a buy, but either way, play this game. Oh, and one more thing: Don't startle the Witch.
