Introduction and Synopsis
Gears of War 3 is the third and final game in the main trilogy that tells the story Marcus Fenix, Jace Stratton, Samantha Byrne, Anya Stroud, and Bernadette Mataki, and the fate of humanity with the Locust threat temporarily checked by a new and greater threat to humanity: the Lambent.
It is eighteen months after the events of GoW 2, and Delta along with its command are now living on board the converted aircraft carrier Raven's Nest. The national government has been disbanded, and no clear front-line exists as the war has devolved into something less than a holding action.
The Locust threat has mutated into an even greater one as the Lambent have taken over what was the underground Locust domain as well as the above ground human cities. Small pockets of human and Locust survivors face extinction at the hands of the Lambent, who are busy absorbing the remaining Locust and anyone or anything else that comes in their path, and Delta Squad? Delta Squad no longer officially exists.
The story-mode is an important element of the Gears series, make no mistake about that, and Gears of War 3 will answer a lot of the questions that players have had since the beginning, and at the same time fill in a lot of the backstory that there was never really time to address in the high-paced frenzies action of the first two games.
Gamers will have a chance to obtain full closure on the story, but make no mistake, the glowing ruby in this arrangement is the online multi-player mode, which features prominently in the upcoming Public Beta for GoW 3, and includes the addictive challenge modes made infamous in the last game as well as a wave-based team mode that is just perfect for new players.
Rather than take three steps, die, and end up being forced to watch the rest of the battle as a ghostly observer, players will be able to re-enter the fight after X number of seconds, which means new players will actually have the opportunity to build some multi-player confidence and experience, and not just walk away after growing tired of 30 seconds of action followed by ten minutes of observation!
Gears uses the classic Third-Person Shooter perspective, and its wide selection of weapons and kit are legendary in the genre, as is the necessity for a tactical approach to game play in the series, which pits the player against a brutal and intelligent enemy who capitalizes on any mistakes that the player makes. Fighting from cover, and using precise aim is a big part of the strategy for staying alive. Knowing the weaknesses of the various types of enemy that you will face also plays a major role in how long you live -- because no matter how good you are, eventually you will die. Oh yes.
The proper us of tactics -- especially when you are playing cooperatively with partners -- is very important, as is remembering that every weapon that you have doubles as a melee weapon -- and when things get fast and tight, using your carbine as a bladed club often makes more sense and is far more effective than trying to shoot the enemy with it!
Welcome to Gears of War, where our business is killing mutated brain-sucking monsters, and business is good!
Fans of the first two games will find a lot has changed in Gears 3, particularly play in the Campaign mode of the game, which provides a deeper cooperative story (okay, you can play it in single-player mode but why would you do that?) that places the player inside a near hopeless world that has been ravaged by monsters known as the Locust. It was bad enough when the Locust was the enemy, but at least we knew what to expect and how to deal with them.
The new threat that has materialized is called The Lambent, and while they are just as much a threat to the Locust as they are to us, that fact presents very little comfort to what is left of humanity, because we do not have the option of joining forces with the Locust, and even if we did, we couldn't trust them not to eat us for breakfast if they happen to run out of MRE's!
The biggest change in playing in Campaign mode is the addition of two more cooperative slots -- which means that you and three of your buddies can team up to take on the Lambent, as opposed to just one buddy before. In addition to making this a much more social experience, for the first time the game features three distinct and unique female characters that can be played, which means that you can now have your girlfriend or wife join you in putting the hurt on Locust and Lambent alike! How cool is that?
We will understand if you confuse the cooperative Campaign with multi-player mode in this game, but just to be sure that you get it, playing WITH your friends is not the same thing as playing AGAINST your friends, the latter being something that you cannot do in Campaign.
On the multi-player side are all of the familiar and well-loved game modes, with a variety of new and challenging maps that include weapons that are familiar, and some that are new. Even the weapons that we think we know are different, as the weapons and combat system received a lot of TLC in the run-up to creating GoW 3. In fact it could be said -- and it has been said -- that GoW 2 was just one big Beta Test for GoW 3!
Gears of War 3 is scheduled for a Fall 2011 release, with the Public Beta Test of the multi-player content scheduled to take place some time between Summer and Fall 2011.
