The most effctive strategy to employ when attacking enemies is kiting, this is when you back-peddle away keeping distance between you and the enemy while at the same time shooting them from a distance. This tactic is effective because the majority of enemies cannot do ranged damage and can easily be killed by keeping in motion.
When choosing two guns to carry at once you will find it more beneficial to select a pair that compliment each other. For example, a submachine gun with a rifle.
You can check to see which stats will increase when you upgrade a weapon by selecting it at the 'Weapon' screen and looking at the dark blue bars.
Keep an eye out for the blue upgrade tokens that are randomly dropped by enemies when you defeat them as these can be used to level up your currently equipped weapons.
When selecting a weapon to upgrade choose one that is frequently used as the more it is used the stronger it will get.
Resist the temptation to skip areas when the opportunity arises and visit them regardless in order to kill monsters to refill your abilities and get money for better weapons.
