As you might expect, this free, iOS exclusive game was created to coincide with the cinema release of The Hunger Games. Entitled 'Girl on Fire', this auto-running action game looks back to retro-gaming and has you playing as Katniss, while battling a horde of 'tracker jackers' armed with your bow and arrow.
Being an auto-runner, all you have to do is focus on attacking and avoiding your enemies, with the computer taking care of the running for you. You do need to jump to switch between one of the two plains, and to dodge enemy projectiles.
The game is split into two sections, The Woods and District 12. These imaginatively-named levels are explored in more detail below. The Woods has you mainly facing Tracker Jackers, while District 12 also has a hovercraft to dispatch throughout the level.
In The Woods, when you are hit by one of the Tracker Jackers, the screen pulsates with a blue tinge. If you are hit for a second time while this is ongoing, you will fail the level. Wait for the hue to change back to normal and you can start taking those risks again.
In District 12, however, you have just one life. Get hit at any stage, and it's game over.
This is a very simple level. The two plains are the ground and an upper canopy. Use the jump mechanic to avoid the Tracker Jackers' gunfire. Also, when the Tracker Jackers come that fly horizontally, ensure you jump up or down to avoid their movement.
The regular Tracker Jackers provide a moderate challenge, but there are also some that appear inside diamonds in the corners of the screen. The best tactic for dealing with these is not to engage them. Jump around between the two plains to avoid their projectiles, but there is no need to shoot them. While they are on screen, no other Tracker Jackers will appear, yet you will still be traveling along the level, and their shots are easy enough to avoid.
There is no indication of when this level ends. Once you reach a certain distance, a cut-scene will play indicating your success.
The key feature of this level is the hovercraft. The level is again split into two plains, allowing you to avoid enemy projectiles. The hovercraft shoots electronic beams at you which will kill you in one if you are on their plain.
You need to take out the hovercraft to progress, so while avoiding it's attacks, fire your arrows at it as rapidly as possible. After a lot of shooting, you will see it lose part of it's mass. The hovercraft will then move around behind you, at which point you should continue the above strategy of dodging and returning fire.
Eventually, the hovercraft will move off. You will then have to deal with the diamond Tracker Jackers like in the first level. Once they are all taken care of, the hovercraft returns and you need to repeat the above I.e. Destroy part of it, then it will move around behind you, and you can continue attacking.
Finally, it will blow up completely, and the level, and game, is complete.
The game itself is very short, but you can get some more out of The Hunger Games in the Extras section, where trailers, competitions and merchandise is available.
