If you find you need several thousand credits before you can reach the relative safety of the Weevil you will need to do the escort missions where you get paid in exchange for escort duty. Your best strategy in these escort missions is to retire back to a safe distance when the fighting begins and just collect the cargo cannisters when they appear on the rader. Let the other escort ships and the cargo ships themselves deal with the pirates.

Keep an eye on your sheilds for when they fall below 50 per cent so you can crank up the green shield allocation on your Power Management System.

When you encounter a pack of pirates the best strategy is to fly into them so they break and scatter allowing you to hunt them down individually.

A good strategy is to use the early stages of the game when the pirates you encounter turn up alone and in tiny ships as a place to practice your dogfighting skills.

When you destroy other ships they will release cargo canisters which will appear on your rader as yellow dots and drift around for a variable length of time before self-destructing. Make sure you you fly into them so their random contents get added to your cargo roster.
