My dumb question is how do I make torches in the workshop from improvised materials? Or is it only in the shop using diamonds?

Torches need logs & vines. Gather logs by "cutting" trees w/ an ax and gather vines by "digging" a variety of small plants like the snow encrusted ferns. Oh, and orange trees, when axed, give up vines, too.
