Updating the app will not cause you to lose your progress in the game.

Hi, I'm almost at level 36 and have installed every game update as it's been released, with no problem. However, if you are concerned you can back up your game by uploading your game data to the Sims freeplay cloud before you update. If you have any issues or lose your game data, you can just open the app after the update and download your data from the cloud. It will stay there for seven days, giving you plenty of time to get it sorted. You can find the cloud in the game's options menu :-)
