The stars represent how good they are at finding things when they dig a hole. For example a 3 or 2 star dog will be better at finding LP and Simoleons. :]

The difference in stars basically means your Pet for the lower stars find less simolians LP etc. Higher stars obviously find more or are faster at finding them the more you play the more you get you have to pay attention hell bark or something then an ! Will pop up (: hth .
