You can't get rid of it, but you can ignore it to a certain extent. Personnally, I like the extra land and some of the Decorations, but I don't want to have all those big tall Buildings to upgrade (parking garage, office Building and so on).
So I bought what I wanted, then maxed out the currency-producing Buildings (the ones that make the coffee, yoga mats etc) so the icon no longer hovers over them, and I'm mostly ignoring the rest.
I may go back to it in between events, when things are slower, but it's not a priority to me. Since it's not time-limited, I can work on it at my convenience and focus on other things as I choose.
