Did you send them on a task? They'll come back when they've finished a task. Eg. Shopping at the kwik e mart. That takes 60mins. They go inside the shop then come out

If you put houses into you inventory, the character associated with the Building, will sometimes disappear with the house, just select your inventory from the left side of your screen, when you press the build button, and take out your inventory Items
