Yes, when you do the first horse race, as you pass through the first town shot everyone else in the races. Get off your horse then get onto theirs and finish the race. Keep winning races and doing this , as you progress the horses get better and better. This is how I got the mechanical horse.
You must start from the first race, I've tried with my old game but nothing happened.
