It is because they score more points than you by doing tricks and getting holeshots.

Exactly as Guest states above, being the first to cross the finish line isn't the most important, although I do think that's stupid. To Ricky, crossing the finish line first was ALL that ever mattered. Instead, you have to have the most points, which are accumulated via your time compared to your competition, freestyle tricks, and wrenches collected along the way. A good freestyle score, coupled with a first or a close second will win most every time.
