I managed to open 9 without using gold 
The 10th however... I used all my (freely gained) gold for that but it never was a computer chip but only crappy units.

I don't know either, all I know is that it is very frustrating part of my game. Its like Gree gives you a couple at first, gives you 1-2 more over the next day, nothing for a couple days, feels sorry for you, gives you hope by giving you your 5th or 6th (crate, box, chip, etc) then gives you 2 more with 24hrs to go to make you think you need to spend a bunch of gold to get those last 1-2 that you need... It never ends well!
