How do u get past police giant in yr 3?

The police giant is guarding door and cannot get through I've tried everything is there something I have missed doing before I get to him?

Find your way into the courtyard and out back, head on the entrance at the left side of this area, a ghost should show up again and will lead you to Hagrid.
