Private chat does not happen in-game.
If you are in a neighborhood you can chat with your team members through neighborhood chat, everyone in the hood will see that chat.
Or you can send a Thank you letter to them by:
1. When players help you, an envelope appears on the crate they filled or the plant they revived.
2. Double tapping on this envelope sends a 'thank you' letter.
