Is the "dragonsai" tree (which grows gems) just for gems to give away to friends or do we get to use/keep some of them ourselves?

I believe that it is used to give more friend gems each day. Normally you can only give 3 friends gems, but with the tree you can give 6 friends gems. I think this is how that works. Someone else told me this.
We do not get to use it.
