Where do I get oranges without buying an orange tree for gems?

The only way would be the tree dropping from the magic garden or your knights finding it in an advanture. Sometimes the garden will give you a straight up fruit. Either case is rare.
Orange trees come free from the knight's quest/castle. They are random. Eventually, you'll have so many you won't know what to do with them all.
Oranges can drop from Sir Pigglesworth, the magic garden, etc...but they, too, are random. You'll also get a royal exchange trade with the fruit farmers, which will drop fruits.
