How do you request specific gifts, such as the parts to build the ice-cream maker?

You click on the box of materials. It will then say tap to manage. You can then send a materials request to your friends, and once you have all the required parts you build your machine.

More explaination. Just click on the Ice cream machine. Then It show Tap to manage then just choose material request to your friend.

To get gifts to build with, you need to go to DESIGN. Some appliances will have a little hammer in the corner. When you click on those then you will some materials to build them. It should let you do a gift request, and when you get it, you will have the materials to build your thing.
