It means that when you see a card and it either says normal, special, rare, hero or platinum and platinum is the best to get. When you have normal or rare battig the bat won't change couler but when all the other types of cards are up to bat then it will change couler. :-)

Player cards come in different varieties. The normal and rare cards don't get a special bat. Special, Hero and Platinum batters will step up to the plate with an interestingly skinned bat. Next time this player is at bat, he will have a differently skinned bat.

I have not noticed that different bats are better at hitting doubles or homers. Contact type seems to be tied to your player's skill versus the pitchers strenghts. Of course your ability to press the button at the right time and not swing at bad pitches plays a role, too.

Rare players will have a black or grey colored bat from time to time. Not sure why, but it may depend on the pitcher they are facing and their status.
