Im having trouble beating the climber....any one else have any ideas to help?

I played climber forever thinking "I've got to be doing something wrong... It can't be that hard!" and I was right.
When you swipe down to make him pull up, only swipe down in the GREEN section of the screen, then swipe up to make him move. I was keeping my finger on him the whole time and could only get about halfway up, but if you only put your finger in the green section it's extremely easy to beat.
