The key to being successful in this game is communication which means using the game's Message feature to bring to your party members attention any potential problems so you can sort out a solution.

Make sure that your character's HP is not low as healing requires Action Points. If your characters HP is low you need to heal them before you decide to attack enemies.

It is important that you make sure when putting together a party you have different types of characters otherwise you will encounter problems with certain types of enemies.

If you explore dungeons cautiously and can manage to creep up to a patrolling enemy without them seeing you and tap on them when their back is turned you will get a free turn in the ensuring fight which will give you an advantage. Doing this will not work on the bosses though.

Keep in mind that special attacks that focus on single enemies tend to do more damage than those that hit more.

The best strategy is to take out one enemy party member at a time focussing first on anyone with strong attacks or healing abilities.

When you find yourself fighting easy opponents or against small groups a good tactic is to switch to 'auto' and let the AI deal with them.
