All you have to do to start the game is to get some wood. Go to a tree and chop the whole thing down. Second thing you need to do is make some wooden planks and make a crafting table and make a wooden pickax. I usually brake a house in the side of a mountain just to get started. Plus when you do that you get blocks to make a regular house. At that point I think you are ready to make a stone pickax. Make one of them. Go mining once in a while.
