Higher jumping!
If you place some stairs, then in front place 1 slab, a slab higher, then walk up, you can sometime get a boost. Jump as soon as you touch the slab to go higher. You can also do this with slabs in water - walking and jumping onto one can sometimes make you fly for no reason ( Creative mode only )
