If you are struggling to bring down the enemy with your canon you can always opt to use your missles to take them down.

A good strategy to escape when you are being chased by the enemy is to fly as high as you can, when you do this they will give up chasing you and you will then be able to pick them off when you come back down.

Firing two missles instead of one if you manage to get a decent lock-on the enemy will save you having to lock-on again.
