More often than not after a session, you will be given the choice of watching an ad to gain a box. This is always worth doing as it will reward you coins and warp stones.
Upgrade
When you start the game with the original ship focus on upgrading the Missle Barrage first. After that work on Fire Rate, Jumbo Shot, Turret, and Magnet. Make sure when you upgrade you keep everything more or less balanced so that no one power-up is a lot stronger than the others.
Sol Valou Ship
Although it is not necessary, if you decide to spend real money on the game then your best option is to buy the Sol Valou ship as it comes with great boosts and is tough.
